AvatarRecently, my cousin Sharon McAmis, admitted on Facebook that she lives an abnormal life there on her 15 acres north of Hempstead, with the horses, dogs, cats, chickens, and tree ducks.  Of course I have thought for some time that she is a tad different from others – AND — she is also one of the most endearing people I have ever known.

Sharon started life as a city girl, daughter of a successful Houston physician.  But this is Texas, and her dad bought a horse ranch as a weekend retreat. As a young professional, she split time between her horticulture studies at A&M and her two jobs as her dad’s business manager overseeing clinic and ranch affairs.

Sharon was bright and sophisticated and most of us expected she would drift back into city life, but eventually she began to manage the ranch and each step along the way she fell more in love with the horses and the land.  There was in her both a grit and a gentleness that inspired the lead character in my book WRANGLE.

Years rolled by; her father sold the ranch and later died, and Sharon settled onto her own land, caring for the last of the thoroughbreds and quarter horses, and attracting other critters.  Now it’s all about the animals and those of us who adore Sharon follow their escapades on her Facebook page.

There are posts about the demanding horses who end up on the porch if dinner isn’t on time.  The 2 big dogs who sleep inside and the 2 little ones who sleep under a sun lamp on a blanket on the porch with visiting cats, chickens and birds.  The hens and chicks she shelters in cages on the porch and the green-legged hen that insists her cage be placed inside the house.

Recently she admitted in a FB post that her birth control methods with the chickens is not working.  After ferreting out and removing literally hundreds of eggs, there are dozens and dozens of new baby chicks running about the property.  There is never a dull moment at McAmis Acres and the best part of all is that Sharon is willing to share this sincere, good, crazy life with the rest of us.

Whenever I come down there again, I must meet Sharon at her farm, because it sounds so much like our Spingtown farm with all (no most) of the animals running free. So many stories to share.
