YOU MIGHT BE A REDNECK . . .

AvatarComedian Jeff Foxworthy broke out of the pack in the 1980’s with the comic schtick “You might be a redneck. . . .”  It got people’s attention (and drilled down into that little piece of yokel that is in all of us).  I think the phrase is useful in today’s politics, as in “You might be a Never-Trumper if . . . .”

For example, you might be a Never-Trumper if you are law-abiding, believe in the Constitution and the Rule of Law.  You certainly wouldn’t want to be voting for Trump in 2020, not after his history of obstructing justice, ignoring Congressional subpoenas, violating campaign finance laws, weakening federal law enforcement.

You might be a Never-Trumper if you believe in human decency and morality and teach this to your children.  You certainly wouldn’t vote for Trump, not after he has put immigrant children in cages, conducted personal attacks against the defenseless, threatened jail for opponents, grabbed women by the “p***y.”

You might be a Never-Trumper if you want to avoid cataclysmic war.  You would not vote for Trump with his erratic decision-making, his disregard for military and national intelligence advice, his punishing tariffs on tinder-box countries, and the blind eye he turns toward other bad actors like Saudi Arabia and North Korea.

You might be a Never-Trumper if you believe we are safer with strong alliances of other Democratic nations and NATO.  You would not want Trump to continue to abuse those alliances, try to dismantle NATO and the United Nations, or cozy up to historic foes like Russia, who actively worked to get Trump elected in 2016.

You may be confused about who to vote for in 2020, but it is a binary choice – Trump or the Democratic nominee (since we have a two-party system).  If you believe in stability, decency and Democracy, then you are a Never-Trumper and you vote for the Dems in the next Presidential election, regardless of affiliation. Here’s more:

You might be a Never-Trumper if you know that science is the basis for all human progress and you believe that climate change is an existential threat.  You would not support Trump’s denial of the problem, dismantling of the EPA, withdrawal from the Paris Accord and withholding of scientific proof of climate crisis.

You might be a Never-Trumper if you know that Freedom of the Press is the First Amendment to the Constitution and the cornerstone for protecting Democracy.  You would not vote for Trump, his dismantling of democratic norms, thousands of lies, and persistent attacks on the Press that bravely reports his misbehavior.

You might be a Never-Trumper if you know that America was built on the labor of immigrants and working people.  You would not want to continue Trump’s disregard for these classes; his support of the wealthy through tax breaks and other favors and a dodgy Cabinet of people intent on increasing their own net worth.

Take a look at Trump’s swath of destruction – weakening of public education, health care, women’s rights, worker protections.  Financial waste, ballooning national debt, farmers, others strapped by trade wars.  Public lands pillaged by drilling, a blind eye to violent racists, weapons of war killing our children.

And in the midst of all of this, Trump has benefited financially. If you are weary of the assault, if you are alert to the giant con, if you want to return to a country led by people with a moral core – then your choice is easy.  No need to debate — even the slightest among the Democratic slate is morally superior to Trump.

    I just might be a Never-Trumper. Maybe even a Trumper-Thumper?

    • Oh my, I should think so. Love the coined phrase — “Trumper-Thumper.” I have done a lot of “thumping” on FB for 2 years because we have to keep it alive that this is NOT NORMAL and we need to get back to normal in 2020.
